Black History Month: Gabby Evbota BEM

October is Black History Month and is a vital opportunity to celebrate the rich contributions of Black individuals to our communities and the football landscape. In Norfolk, we believe that football is be a sport for all, regardless of background or race, and we are committed to promoting an inclusive environment in all aspects of the game.

Read a statement from the Norfolk FA Inclusion Strategy Advisory Group Chair, Gabby Evbota BEM, about the importance of Black History Month and this year's theme, Reclaiming Narratives.

"As Chair of the Inclusion Strategic Advisory Board for our football association, I am delighted to introduce this year's Black History Month theme: "Reclaiming Narratives." This theme resonates deeply with our mission to celebrate and honour the profound contributions of Black individuals, not only within the professional ranks but also at the grassroots level, where the passion for football begins. It is a call to action, urging us to revisit history through a lens that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that every story, from local pitches to global stadiums, is heard and acknowledged.

"Grassroots football plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of our game. It is here that many Black players, coaches, and volunteers have laid the foundation for their sporting journeys, often overcoming significant challenges. By reclaiming narratives, we aim to shine a light on the stories of these individuals who, through their resilience and talent, have helped enrich our sport. From community clubs to youth academies, we have a responsibility to amplify voices that have too often been overlooked and ensure that opportunities for growth and recognition are available to everyone, regardless of background.

"I encourage all members of our association to reflect on this shared history and take an active role in promoting inclusion at every level of the game. By recognising the richness of diversity within grassroots football, we can build a more inclusive football community where every player, coach, and fan feels valued and respected. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and pave the way for a future where equality and unity prevail both on and off the pitch."
